Abstract ◊ The novel The Flounder (1977) by German writer Günther Grass suggests an alternative model of European civilization history from a «female» point of view as a development of cooking art, being pledge of human survival and reproduction. Simultaneously Grass is arguing against a feminist version in philosophy of history, meaning a specific female mentality type and its impact on human culture. The structure of Grass's novel is related to a romantic fairytale and its reflected view of the history corresponds to postmodernist outlook appearing in the 70s in Germany and having a game approach to the traditional historiography and the principle of dynamic balance of dissimilarity.
Keywords: Grass, Flounder, female version, history, female mentality, romantic fairytale, postmodernity.
