Khairullina N. G. Suggestion of a Tolerant Consciousness among Tyumen Youth

Abstract ♦ The paper presents a theoretical and practical analysis of the problem of tolerance in general, and the fostering of the values of tolerance among young people of the Tyumen region. The investigation into the essential characteristics of tolerance allows to consider the covered concept as a manifestation of patience and respect to someone else's standpoint in conjunction with commitment to a mutual change of viewpoints as a result of a critical dialogue. In this context, the tolerance can be considered as a condition for a successful socialization of young people that consists in the ability to live in harmony with oneself and surrounding persons.
In order to confirm the standpoint expressed in the article, the author analyzes the results of a questionnaire survey conducted in the settlements of Tyumen Oblast in spring and autumn of 2013. Suggestions of tolerance among Tyumen youth are characterized on the basis of such indicators as ethnic tolerance, religious tolerance, protest potential, etc. There are the following important social prerequisites for the development of tolerant attitudes in the youth milieu of the region: stable inter-ethnic and religious relations, the presence of the feeling of pride for their national identity among young people, the desire to maintain the traditions and customs of the nation. The following factors have a negative impact on the tolerant attitudes of young people: the growth of inter-ethnic and interreligious tensions, hostile attitude towards people of other nationalities and religions, the awareness of enmity from people of other nationalities and denominations. A hostile attitude towards people of other nationalities is directly related to migration processes that have engulfed the Tyumen region.
The author draws a conclusion that the level of tolerance among youth in Tyumen Oblast is high and it promotes the consolidation of the principles of tolerance in the society at large.
